A Fake Review I wrote
Charlie Tanne – “A Fish of Another Colour” EP – M.U. Records 4/5
Having first gained recognition as one of the pioneers and leading lights of the South African Rhythms N Flavas scene in the late 90s, Tanne seemingly turned his back on the sound he helped to create, and for most of this century, has instead focused primarily on developing the less than revolutionary – to these ears at least – Zipstep sound. This release sees the return to the form that many have been waiting for. Three slabs of prime RnF styles infused with all the production trickery amassed over the Zipstep years. Crisp beats and sublime bass underpin “Subterfuge”. On “figment”, a barrage of explosive drum programming ably prop up MC Ersatz, as he rages against what he sees as modern fraudulent society, a theme repeated throughout all the tracks. The EPs title track is soulful yet tough, combining shimmering beats with the sensitive vocals of newcomer Dee Sepchunze. An essential release if you can track it down.
